The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents is scheduled to convene for its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, May 1. Item 12 on the agenda is the discussion of project scope and budget for the highly-anticipated "Kyle Field Redevelopment".
It is expected that all phases of the two-year project will be approved and budgeted at tomorrow's meeting. The university has alerted media to a press conference at the Board of Regents facilities shortly after the expected vote at 6:00 PM where Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin and System Chancellor John Sharp will discuss the status of the stadium project.
It is expected that the BOR will approve a budget of approximately $450 million to increase capacity of the stadium to 103,000 which includes a new south end zone structure which will fully enclose the stadium.
In phase I of the proposed project, work is scheduled to begin immediately upon approval the removal of several buildings adjacent to the current stadium including historic G. Rollie White Coliseum, the Netum Steed Laboratory, and the Read Building which housed various intramural and teaching facilities.
Phase II is scheduled to begin immediately after Texas A&M's final 2013 home game against Mississippi State on November 9. Between the 2013 and 2014 seasons, phase II will see the reconstruction of the first deck on the east side (student's side) and the addition of the south end structure.
Phase III will begin immediately following the 2014 season and will include a complete rebuild of the west side stands (former students) to include larger concourse areas, improved restroom facilities, expanded suites and premium seating area, and a large overhang to block direct sunlight on the fans.
The entire stadium project is scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2015 season. During the two year construction period, all home games will remain at Kyle Field.
At a capacity of 103,000, the new Kyle Field will be the largest stadium in the SEC and the third largest in the nation behind only Michigan (109k) and Penn State (106k).
