LOS ANGELES --- Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel's remarkable first season earned him Best Male College Athlete honors on Wednesday at the ESPYs at the Nokia Theatre.
The ESPY award capped a record-setting 2012 freshman season that saw him also win the Heisman Trophy, the Davey O'Brien Award and the Manning Award, as well as Associated Press College Player of the Year honors and consensus All-America honors. Manziel spent the first half of Wednesday addressing the 1,000-plus media members at the Southeastern Conference Media Days in Hoover, Ala., before jetting to Los Angeles for the ESPYs.
Manziel, from Kerrville, Texas, was a finalist for the College Athlete of the Year Award along with basketball player Trey Burke of Michigan, hockey player Drew LeBlanc of St. Cloud State and wrestler Kyle Dake of Cornell.
"It's humbling to receive this honor when I look around and see all the other remarkable athletes here at the ESPYs," Manziel said. "I wouldn't have received this award without the help of my family, my teammates, my coaches and Texas A&M
Manziel re-wrote the NCAA, SEC and Texas A&M record book in 2012 as he became the
first SEC player in surpass the 5,000-yard barrier in total offense in a season. His
5,116 total yards were an NCAA freshman record and ranked No. 9 in NCAA FBS history.
He had three games with 300 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in his first season,
which had never been done any FBS player in a career. He was the fourth quarterback
to pass for 20-plus touchdowns and rush for 20-plus touchdowns in a season, and he
was the fifth player to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 3,000 in a season.
Manziel was also a finalist for the Breakout Athlete of the Year and the Aggie
football team was nominated for Biggest Upset.
