Takeaways from Weekly Football Presser

The Texas A&M coaching staff and selected players held the season's first game week media luncheon as the team prepares to open the season against Rice. Aggie Websider's David Sandhop discusses the major storylines and news about the team.

I've always found that you can get a lot more insight from the coordinators than coach Sumlin. That was the case yesterday as the head coach was jousting with ESPN's Mark Schwartz asked about the Aggie code of honor and Johnny Manziel.

Coach Snyder really sounded excited about the defense. He's a little apprehensive about all the freshmen that will play but he loves their athleticism and speed. Asked if this is his most athletic defense he's ever fielded, he said that in comparison to last year this group is much faster and said if he can get them in the right spot, they will make more plays than last year's unit. He ended saying this unit will surprise the pundits.

He also gushed over Darian Claiborne several times, saying he's a national playmaker with instincts calling him "he's just a football player". Yes, I will shamelessly pat my back on this one. He was my pick for top defensive newcomer before fall camp. He also mentioned Mastrogiovanni. He is also high on Tyrone Taylor. He didn't seem as excited about Nate Askew and even said that they will give Shaan Washington a shot at the rush linebacker spot if Nate can't get it done.

He also hinted that Clay Honeycutt has earned the starting spot at safety alongside Howard Matthews. In fact, he compared Honeycutt to Matthews saying that neither were in the staff's plans this time last year but both have completely turned it around.

On offense, McKinney mentioned that Brandon Williams will likely not see action on Saturday, but it sounds like they will work him back into action the following week. Also, he hinted that thee may not be as many freshmen WR's playing as some think, mentioning Seals-Jones and possibly Gonzalez as newbies that will line up at receiver although he didn't rule out others playing if the veterans don;t get it done. But it sounds like he's high on the four starting vets....Evans, Holmes, Kennedy, Walker.
