The last throw of the day was about a 60-yard fly to Mike Evans. Even before Evans catches it perfectly in stride, Johnny yells "boom"....pro day over.
The guy has a flare for the dramatic.
Anyway, I decided to stay home and listen to Mike Mayock and the experts as Johnny was making his throws. I figured I could get more insight doing this than standing in the back with the rest of the media. I'm glad I did.
First of all, Johnny made about 60 throws and only two balls hit the ground. One was a slightly high seam pass to Travis Labhart that hit his hands but was a tad high. He also threw a low ball to Labhart and that was his one significant miss.
The general comments is that Manziel's long ball is incredible and his strength. They said that he released and anticipated a deep ball better than anybody they've seen. They felt he showed enough arm strength for the NFL level.
The one consistent issue they brought up was he was a little "noisy" in his footwork and on certain throws he tends to stay on his back foot. One analyst also said that on touch passes, Johnny relaxes and stretches which tips off those passes. He said that every pass and route needs to show the same mechanics so a QB doesn't tip his read.
The other issue was that he drifted on his drop and ended up behind the guard slot and even the guard-tackle slot. Mayock felt some of Manziel's intermediate throws were released too low and would have issues carrying over an LB. In all cases, the experts said it was something minor that could be corrected and that it wouldn't affect his draft stock.
Overall, the analysts gave Johnny high marks. I just turned it to ESPN and Mel Kiper said it was the best QB pro day of the year and specifically said it was better than Bortles. He had Manziel going to Minnesota at No. 8 before today. After the workout, he thinks Jacksonville at No. 3 will take him and it's not out of the question with the Texans.
So Johnny did what he needed to do. At worst, he solidified a Top 10 pick and likely moves into the Top 3 if not No. 1.
