Texas A&M junior center Mike Matthews was one of 64 players named to the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which is given annually to college football's most outstanding center.
Mike Matthews is the second Matthews brother to be named to the prestigious list, joining older brother Kevin, who was a Rimington Trophy candidate for the Aggies in 2009. Another brother, Jake, was a finalist for the Outland Trophy and won the SEC's Jacobs Blocking Trophy as a tackle for the Aggies in 2013.
Matthews, from Missouri City, Texas, started all 13 games at center for the 9-4 Aggies in 2013. With Matthews at the point of attack in 2013, the Aggies led the Southeastern Conference in passing offense (353.3/G), scoring offense (44.2/G) and total offense (538.4), and ranked in the top 10 nationally in all three categories. The Aggies produced 10 games with 500 or more total yards, including three 600-yard plus efforts.
Matthews was rated as the No. 5 center prospect in the country by Scout when he graduated Fort Bend Elkins High.
