Aggies dominant in 89-63 over Long Island

Led by Antoine Wright's 25 points and 7 rebounds, Texas A&M won their final non-conference game of the season in decisive fashion by beating Long Island 89-63 at Reed Arena in College Station. The win marked the fourth victory out of the past five contests for the Aggies.

Wright scored 18 points in the opening period for the Ags, and sunk a 3-pointer with 3 seconds remaining in the half, leading A&M to a 44-27 lead at the break.

Texas A&M (7-4) completed 23-of-24 free throw attempts for an impressive 95.8% total. The win was a true team effort for the Aggies as Andy Slocum added 15 points to Wright's impressive showing. Luis Clemente came off the bench in relief for Slocum and posted 13 points on the day. Kevin Turner provided an additional 11.

Brandon Thomas led the scoring for Long Island (4-7) with 16 points. Raymond Edwards added 14.

After the game, Texas A&M head coach Melvin Watkins discussed the win. "We tend to sometimes play to the competition, and I thought tonight we did a much better job of staying focused on what we wanted to accomplish and what we were doing, as opposed to worrying about the competition."

"Hopefully this gives our kids some confidence to know that we can play well if we execute, if we do the things that we talk about. Each and every time we do those things, I think it gives this team a little bit more confidence."

A&M opens conference play on Saturday at Missouri. Tip-off is at 12:30pm.
