Countdown 2007: Websider Impact Players - #19

Aggie Websider takes a look at 25 players who can make the biggest impact for the Aggies this year. These rankings are not based on talent, but rather, what contributions can be made by individuals to put Texas A&M back among the nation's elite programs. No. 19? Senior OL Kirk Elder.

The No. 19 2007 Websider Impact Player is not only a huge offensive lineman, he's also one of the leaders in the huddle—senior offensive guard, Kirk Elder.

The 6-foot-5, 298 pound guard is a load in the trenches and can clear just about anything that gets in his way, which makes things a little easier for the Aggie backfield.

What he's done so far

As a freshman in 2004, Elder earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors after starting 11 of 12 games at guard. He was part of an offensive line that rushed for 167.2 yards per game and threw for another 261.2. The average 6.3 yards per play was the second highest average in school history.

In 2005 Elder started all 11 games at quick guard and again, earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors on a record-setting offense. The Aggies averaged 442.3 yards of total offense per game in 2005, which is the second highest average in school history. A&M also rushed for 234.9 yards per game, which was the highest average since 1991.

Last year, Elder started all 13 games and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors as one of the top offensive linemen in the Big 12. His efforts helped the Aggies lead the Big 12 in time of possession, third-down conversion percentage and rushing yards per game (210.5). Elder and the A&M offensive line gave up just 1.4 sacks per game last year as well.

Why he's important

Elder was on the 1006 Leadership Council and should be elected once again this year. As a team leader, he's another person that players look to in the huddle. He's not afraid to mix it up in the trenches and is one of the keys to the Aggies offensive attack. He's started 24 straight games for the Aggies, so he's as durable as they come.

Like Corey Clark, this is Elder's last chance to make an impression on NFL scouts and he'll come out ready to show what he can do. Look for Elder to be another anchor on offense and help the Aggie running backs to what could be the best rushing numbers that A&M has ever seen.
