Countdown 2007: Websider Impact Players - #15

Aggie Websider takes a look at 25 players who can make the biggest impact for the Aggies this year. These rankings are not based on talent, but rather, what contributions can be made by individuals to put Texas A&M back among the nation's elite programs. No. 15? Junior DE Cyril Obiozor.

Aggie Websider's No. 15 Impact Player in 2007 is junior defensive end Cyril Obiozor—technically. Obiozor is listed at the top of the depth chart for the second defensive end position, opposite Chris Harrington.

Obiozor (6-foot-5, 257 pounds) began to emerge in 2006, especially down the stretch in November and should contribute even more in 2007, giving the A&M defensive line a one-two punch at defensive end.

But you'll also see a heavy dose of junior Michael Bennett as well, which makes the No. 15 Impact Player somewhat an "impact position," rather than a single player.

What he's done so far

As a redshirt freshman in 2005, Obiozor recorded 13 tackles in 10 games, including a season-high four tackles against Iowa State.

Last year, Obiozor emerged as one of the top pass rushing threats on the team, racking up 37 tackles (8 solo), including 2 tackles for a loss and a sack. He also hauled in a key interception in the Aggies' 12-7 victory in Austin against Texas and was a force to be reckoned with at defensive end.

He started the final two regular season games against Nebraska and Texas, which will continue in 2007 according to the most recent depth chart.

Bennett, who is listed as Obiozor's backup on the most recent depth chart, racked up six tackles for a loss and two sacks in 2006, and was the leading tackler among reserves in 2006. There's no reason to believe that trend will be any different in 2007, unless he plays his way into a starting role.

Why he's important

Chris Harrington (11.5 TFL, 7.5 sacks) gets most of the attention from the media and opposing offensive game plans, which makes the other defensive end an extremely key position.

If Obiozor improves upon a solid outing in 2006, he should combine with Harrington and Bennett for impressive totals in sacks and tackles for a loss this season (the three combined for 19.5 TFL, 10.5 sacks in 2006).
