Countdown 2007: Websider Impact Players - #8

Aggie Websider continues its look at 25 players who can make the biggest impact for the Aggies this year. These rankings are not necessarily based on talent, but rather, what contributions can be made by individuals to put Texas A&M back among the nation's elite programs. Hard-hitting S/LB Jordan Pugh is No. 8 on the list.

No. 8 on the list of 2007 Websider Impact Players may surprise you—sophomore safety/linebacker (WHIP) Jordan Pugh. He is an athletic underclassmen that hasn't done a whole lot yet, but that could change in 2007, especially because of the position that he plays in the Aggies' 4-2-5 defense.

If he can make a name for him self in 2007, it will put the Aggie defense one step closer to reclaiming the "Wrecking Crew" moniker.

What he's done so far

Not much, but be gentle, he's only been in Aggieland a little over 12 months.

Pugh was one of the top players in A&M's class of 2006 as a consensus Texas top-50 recruit who was ranked as the No. 13 cornerback in the nation by Scout.com. He posted 52 tackles and five interceptions, one of which he returned 60 yards for a touchdown as a senior at Plano High School (Plano, TX).

Last year, Pugh saw limited action but played in all 13 games and made three tackles.

Why he's important

Pugh is a highly-rated impact player this year for two reasons—his athleticism and his position. He's a natural born athlete with talent that most of us can only dream about having. He is a hard-hitting defensive back with sub-4.5 speed who is physical in run support, but also has the skills to be effective in coverage, whether playing man or zone.

That combination of hard-hitting physical play against the run and speed and agility on pass defense is what makes him an impact player at the WHIP position.
