Countdown 2007: Websider Impact Players - #2

We're almost there! Aggie Websider continues its look at 25 players who can make the biggest impact for the Aggies this year. These rankings are not necessarily based on talent, but rather, what contributions can be made by individuals to put Texas A&M back among the nation's elite programs. You could make the case for this back to be No. 1, but Mike Goodson finishes just a bit behind at No. 2.

Mike Goodson exploded onto the scene in 2006—literally. It took him a few games to have the breakout, highlight reel play, but once he got his first one, it seems like he had one after the other. He has the ability to shift into overdrive when busting through the hole and that's why he is No. 2 on the list of 2007 Websider Impact Players.

What he's done so far

He hasn't been at A&M too long, but in his one-year with the Aggies so far, all he's done is be named the Austin American Statesman's Big 12 Freshman of the Year, honorable mention All-Big 12 honors from the Big 12 coaches.

He led the Aggies in rushing with 847 yards on XX carries. His 6.7 yards per carry—which was No. 1 in the Big 12 Conference—received quite a boost thanks to his 64-yard touchdown run in the final minutes against Baylor, and a 41-yard touchdown against Texas—which led the nation in rush defense in 2006. Both of those runs were critical to those two wins.

Why he's important

With the one-two punch of Jorvorskie Lane—a punishing halfback in an offensive lineman's body—and the speedy Goodson, the Aggies rushing attack is something to behold, especially behind this year's veteran offensive line.

The Aggies will need for Goodson to go from a promising freshman back who is capable of big plays, to a workhorse who can put up 1000-1500 yards in 2007. If he's able to take on the extra work load without losing that explosiveness, it will force teams to defend his speed, Lane's power attack and a healthy arm on Stephen McGee.

That combination will put the Aggies in a situation that they aren't too familiar with in the past few years—hoisting a Big 12 Championship trophy.
