It was a big weekend for the new coaching staff at Texas A&M, who hosted it's first big recruiting weekend of the Mike Sherman era. Over 20 commitments and prospects made their way to College Station this past weekend.
While many of the visitors have been long-time commitments, the staff still needed to solidify several difference-makers in the class who started looking at other options during the coaching transition. One of those difference-makers in town this weekend was Scout.com four-star running back Derrick Hall.
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound back from Beaumont Central HS (TX) made the trip to College Station from Beaumont along with fellow Aggie commitment Blake Chavis from Beaumont Westbrook. According to Derrick, the trip was a success.
"It was great. I had a great time hanging out with everybody," Hall said. "I'm feeling it with this class. We're looking forward to playing together next year."
Hall's official host was Billy Chavis, older brother of Blake who saw the field at safety and linebacker as a true freshman. He indicated that the night life was the highlight of the weekend.
"Definitely the highlight was hitting the Northgate and partying with everybody," Hall said. "You don't hear much about it, but it's all fun down there."
But during the day it was all about football and academics, and Hall came away impressed with Coach Sherman and the new staff. In fact, Hall said that the coaches were a big reason why he's solidly in the Aggies' camp after the visit.
"I feel better about my situation at A&M after talking to the new coaches over the phone, and now meeting with them in person," Hall said. "Coach Sherman said he wants to use me as a playmaker and design plays to get me the ball in space."
So does Hall now consider himself a solid commitment to Texas A&M after this past weekend?
"Most definitely," Hall said. "I'm good with A&M. That's where I'll be next year."
Previous to his trip to A&M, Hall had visits scheduled to Missouri for January 18 and LSU for January 25. Does the Beaumont blue chip athlete still plan to take those last two visits?
"Yeah, I think I'm going with Blake to Missouri next weekend," Hall said. "Then I'll probably go to LSU. I'm just going to look and take a trip. The A&M coaches are cool with it. They know my story. They know I'll be playing for them."
With that said, what would it take or what would he have to see on these last two visits for him to switch his commitment?
"Nothing. They don't have to show me nothing," Hall said. "I'm going to A&M."
