According to sources in Alabama, former Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Joe Kines has accepted the offer from Texas A&M to become its new defensive coordinator following the departure of Reggie Herring.

Kines spent four years as the Crimson Tide's defensive coordinator and linebacker coach and assistant head coach.

Under his command, the Alabama defense finished the 2005 season ranked in the top nine in all five major statistical categories, one of only two defensive units in the country able to make such a claim. The Tide ranked first in scoring defense, second in total defense, fifth in pass defense and pass efficiency defense and ninth in rushing defense.

For his efforts, Kines was named as one of six finalists for the Broyles Award, signifying the nation's top assistant coach.

Alabama finished first nationally in pass defense and was second in total defense in 2004 and had a total of five defensive players selected to the All-SEC teams as Cornelius Wortham, DeMeco Ryans, Freddie Roach, Roman Harper and Wallace Gillberry made elite teams.

Overall Alabama ended the 2004 season ranked second in the country in total defense (245.5).

In 2003, the Bama defense produced four All-SEC players, including two first-teamers, Derrick Pope and Antwan Odom. DeMeco Ryans was a second-team pick while Juwan Simpson earned freshman All-SEC honors.

Kines is considered one of the top defensive minds in college football and he brings over 30 years of coaching experience to A&M program.
