Sherman completes staff

Former Texas A&M assistant coach Kirk Doll is coming back for his second tour of duty in Aggieland, completing Mike Sherman's staff just in time for the second junior day event this weekend. Aggie Websider has the full run down on Doll and shares what Sherman had to say about the hire.

As reported on Thursday by Aggie Websider, the hiring of Kirk Doll was made official by Aggie head coach Mike Sherman on Friday.

"Kirk Doll brings a wealth of experience as a football coach to our staff," Sherman said. "His primary role as our special teams coordinator will be key to our immediate success in the 2008 season. I am firmly committed to special teams as it represents one-third of the game. Our players must embrace their roles as special teamers as well as the contributions made by our 12th Man team."

Doll most recently served on Mike Shanahan's Denver Broncos staff for three seasons. His first year, 2004, he was the special teams coach and the following two years he worked with the linebackers.

"Kirk has had a variety of experiences, most recently as a linebackers coach at the Denver Broncos," Sherman added. "He's won a national championship at LSU and has been the assistant head coach at Notre Dame." This will be Doll's second tour of duty in College Station, where he helped build the Wrecking Crew in the late 80's.

"Coach Doll's previous tenure in Aggieland was marked by great success," Sherman stated. "He contributed toward the past success of the "Wrecking Crew", as well as being an outstanding recruiter for Texas A&M."

During Doll's time at Texas A&M (1988-93) the Aggies appeared in five bowl games in his six seasons and won three Southwest Conference championships. The 1991 Wrecking Crew led the country in total defense allowing only 222.4 yards per game. The team compiled a 56-17-1 record for a winning percentage of .764 which included a 32-5 (.865) mark his final three seasons. Doll recruited the East Texas area and he worked with the inside linebackers in 1988 with the likes of Dana Batiste, Quentin Coryatt and Adam Bob, then switched to outside linebackers from 1989-93 working with Aaron Wallace, William Thomas and Marcus Buckley.

"Kathy and I are very excited about the chance to come back to Aggieland, a place where our son, Kyle, was born," Doll said. "I look forward to working with Coach Sherman and the outstanding staff he has put together at Texas A&M. I know a lot of changes have taken place around the campus, but one thing I know has not changed is the Spirit of Aggieland."

Sherman said he couldn't be more pleased with the way his staff has shaped up.

"I am thrilled to get a coach like Kirk to finalize my staff," Sherman explained. "I know it's taken a while to get to this point. I am very proud, not only of the quality of coaches we have hired, but even more so the type of men we will have working with our student-athletes here at Texas A&M."
