Aggies land high profile 09 running back

After the first junior day weekend, some A&M fans were questioning the recruiting ability of new coach Mike Sherman and his staff. But after hauling in four verbal commitments this weekend, including one of the top running backs in the state, those questions may have been put to rest. Aggie Websider visits with the latest A&M commit.

The first junior day event did not result in any verbal commitments which had many Aggie fans wondering about the recruiting ability of Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman. However, Sherman and his new staff had an emphatic answer this past week with four verbal pledges on the second junior day.

The highest profile commitment came on Saturday from Beaumont Westbrook four-star running back Christine Michael, ranked No. 14 on the M&W/Aggie Websider 2009 Top 100.

"The junior day went well. In fact, I committed to A&M," Michael said. "I felt comfortable with all the coaches. In particular, I really got close with Coach Jordan (RB coach). He not only talked to me about how they would use me on the field, but he's spiritual like I am and we connected. He said he wanted to help me find a good church down there and would treat me like his own son. I liked that."

In addition to his connection with the new coaching staff, Michael was attracted to the type of offense that the Aggies will run and also the close proximity to his home and family.

"They plan to run a sophisticated pro-style offense that fits my skills. They plan to use me all over the field and take advantage of my catching ability too," Michael explained. "But the other big factor in committing to A&M is the distance. It's close to home and that's a big deal for me. I admit, I'm a momma's boy."

Michael is considered one of the best, if not the best, running back prospects in the state, gaining over 1200 yards on the ground and 259 yards through the air while sharing time in the Westbrook backfield. He has a nose for the end zone, scoring 28 touchdowns as a junior. In fact, several high profile programs had their eyes on the big prize from Beaumont.

Michael was scheduled to attend the Texas junior day event next weekend, and then the LSU junior day the following weekend. Does he still plan to take those trips?

"Yes I am. I had already scheduled them and I want to make those trips. I asked the A&M coaches if I could take them and they were OK with it," Michael said. "I don't think it will matter though. A&M is my choice."
