It's no secret that new Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman is looking to restock the talent pipeline on the defensive side of the ball, and with the team switching from a 4-2-5 back to a base 4-3 package, recruiting linebackers with speed is a top priority. One of the Class of 2009 linebacker prospects that the Aggies have already offered is Abilene playmaker Chris Williams, who boasts a long list of impressive offers so far.
"I have offers from Tennessee, TCU, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Baylor, Arizona, OSU, OU, and LSU," Williams said. "The schools that are recruiting me the hardest are probably Tech, A&M, OU, Nebraska, and TCU."
It's easy to see the interest in Williams, with over 90 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks as a junior. He was also named the Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year in Texas. What does Williams attribute to his success on the field?
"I always want to be the best," Williams said. "I think I have good instincts on the field and I know where the ball is going to be. The rest is determination. I want to be the first person to get to the player with the ball and I won't stop until I get there."
Williams says he's driven to be the best, and he knows that to be the best he has to work harder and stay ahead of the game.
"You can't ever stop working hard and getting better," Williams said. "There is always somebody busting it trying to catch you. That motivates me to push myself. If I don't, everybody will pass me up."
Williams hasn't been active on the junior day circuit this spring. In fact, of all the schools interested in his services, he's only seen nearby Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
"I've visited Tech, and I'm thinking about going over there again next week," Williams said. "I went to Texas A&M to see my sister play and I stopped by and saw the coaches and the facilities."
So what did the 6-foot-1, 225-pound prospect think of his visit to College Station?
"A&M is a good school with a lot of traditions and great facilities. I liked the new coaches," Williams said. "Coach Kines is a cool guy. He went over to watch my sister's game and answered all my questions about his defense."
Williams says it's too soon to be discussing a leader for his signature. In fact, he said he will probably wait until after his season to take visits and narrow his choices. With that said, the schools he's most interested at the moment include LSU, OU, Nebraska, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M.
"I like those schools because of the coaches," Williams said. "They see my game for what it is, sideline-to-sideline, and they want me to bring that style to their team," Williams said. "They don't want to change my game, or switch me to another position. They want me to be me, not molded into another player that fits their system."
While Williams indicated that a decision is a long way off, he did suggest the most important factors that will be involved in choosing a school when that time comes.
"I want to play on a program that has a chance to compete for a national championship," Williams said. I also want to get a good education in an area that interests me, not be placed in a degree plan for football players. I also want to play in a good atmosphere, and go to a place that I'm comfortable at."
Williams has tentative plans to attend the Scout.com/Under-Armor Combine in Dallas on April 19, but no other camps or visits scheduled at this time.
