Aggies offer hard-hitting safety

Steven Campbell, a hard-hitting safety from Jersey Village HS in northwest Houston, visits with Aggie Websider's David Sandhop about his latest offer from the Aggies, and where he stands in the recruiting process. Does he have a favorite? What are the Aggies' chances? What does he like about A&M?

Jersey Village High School in northwest Houston has historically produced many high D-1 prospects, and the Class of 2009 is no different. Many schools have been hot on the trail of Falcon offensive lineman Bobby Janisch and linebacker Trey Briggs. Add safety Steven Campbell to the list.

The 6-foot, 185-pound prospect already has scholarship offers from Rice, SMU, Utah, Iowa State, Arizona, and most recently Texas A&M.

"Texas A&M offered me on Wednesday," Campbell said. "(A&M asst. coach) Coach (Buddy) Wyatt has been recruiting me and they want me to come up there." Campbell is also hearing regularly from Arizona State, Nebraska, Baylor, Colorado, and Oklahoma State. However, for now the Jersey Village native has two schools in mind.

"I'd have to say that Iowa State and Texas A&M are my leaders right now," Campbell said. "I like the coaches at Iowa State. They run the same defense we use at Jersey Village. Texas A&M is all about tradition."

Campbell has earned a reputation as a big hitter, but he also has the speed that college coaches crave. He clocked a personal best of 4.49 in the forty at a recent workout.

"My strength is my hitting capabilities. I can bring the wood," Campbell said. "But I can also cover and run with anybody. My speed is pretty good."

Campbell indicated that he plans to attend several summer camps, and definitely wants to visit both Iowa State and Texas A&M. He'd like to make a decision in the summer so he can focus on his senior season. The Falcon defender has two primary criteria in evaluating schools, and his decision will boil down to academics.

"I'm going to be looking first at graduation rates and how many players get their degree," Campbell said. "Second, I'm interested in business school and entrepreneurship, so I want to go to a school that's strong in that area."
