Kurt Killens (6-3, 205, 4.57) of McNeil High School in Austin, Texas may live in Longhorn territory, but the soon-to-be junior also lists A&M in his favorites and has ties to Louisiana.
"My grandmother is from Denham Springs, Louisiana," Killens said. "And most of my family is actually from Bogalusa."
Killens, who amassed 103 tackles as a sophomore, said he wants to get an early start on recruiting and several schools seem to have the same idea. Killens has already camped at the University of Texas, and has visited Texas A&M.
"I liked the student body at A&M, and it just seemed like a really friendly city," Killens said. "At UT they treat the players great."
Killens has yet to visit LSU, but plans on attending the Tigers' camp July 20.
"I really like what I've seen from LSU so far, they play hard-nosed defense and I can't wait to get down there."
At this point in his recruitment, Killens is not ruling any program out. Aside from in-state Texas and Texas A&M, and nearby LSU, he is considering several schools from different parts of the country.
"I've been looking at the University of Florida and Miami," he said. "And I love the way Ohio State plays defense and they have such great linebackers. But I don't really know that much about northern schools."
Even at this early stage, however, Killens is focusing his attention on a handful of places.
"Right now I'd put my top schools as Texas, LSU, A&M, and Florida," he said. "I'm interested in a lot of SEC schools because I like the way the SEC plays ball, but LSU specifically stands out."
