Aggies win 49-35 on road over Iowa St

In a game in which there were 84 points and 1,083 yards of total offense, Jerrod Johnson completed 31 of 39 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns to lead Texas A&M to a wild 49-35 Big 12 road win over the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday night.

Iowa State received the opening kickoff and marched 79 yards in 9 plays, with sophomore running back Alexander Robinson diving over from the 1-yard line. Big play on the drive was a 32-yard rush by Robinson that gave the Cyclones a 1st-and-goal at the 4-yard line. The extra point by Grant Mahoney gave Iowa State a 7-0 lead with 10:53 left in the first quarter.

Texas A&M quickly responded, driving 74 yards in 9 plays, scroign on a 35-yard strike from Jerrod Johnson to Terrence McCoy. Randy Bullock;'s extra point tied the game at 7 midway through the first quarter.

Iowa State drove to the Aggie 13-yard line before Grant Mahoney missed a 31-yard yard field goal attempt. After the Aggies moved out to their 46-yard line, Jerrod Johnson connected with tight end Jamie McCoy on two successive plays, the first a 17-yard completion and the second a 37-yard touchdown pass. Bullock's extra point gave the Aggies a 14-7 lead one minute into the second quarter.

It took Iowa State just 7 plays to drive 69 yards and tie the game on a one-yard dive by Cyclone running back Jason Scales. After a 32-yard kickoff return by Cyrus Gray, Texas A&M went on a 12-play, 66-yard drive, with Jamie McCoy catching his second touchdown of the night, this one on a 12-yard pass from Jerrod Johnson. Bullock's extra point gave A&M a 21-14 lead with six minutes left in the first half.

With three minutes left in the first half, Aggie defensive end Michael Bennett sacked Iowa State quarterback Austen Arnaud, forcing a turnover. It took the Aggies just six plays to travel 66 yards and take advantage of the turnover, with Cyrus Gray scoring on a 27-yard run to extend the Aggie lead to 28-14.

With two seconds left in the first half, Iowa State quarterback Austen Arnaud completed a 21-yard pass to Houston Jones. The Aggies were called for roughing the passer, tacking on 15 yards and giving the Cyclones a chance to kick a field goal. Grant Mahoney booted the 32-yard field goal to cut the Aggie lead to 28-17 at the half.

At the half, Jerrod Johnson had completed 17 of 21 passes for 212 yards and 3 TD, with Jamie and Terrence McCoy each having caught 5 passes.

Texas A&M received the opening kickoff of the second half before being forced to punt. Justin Brantly's punt was downed at the Iowa State 2-yard line. The Cyclones drove 89 yards in 15 plays to the Aggie 9-yard line before having to settle for a 26-yard Grant Mahoney field goal, cutting the Aggie lead to 28-20 with 4:42 left in the third quarter.

On the ensuing possession, Jerrod Johnson completed a 43-yard pass to Jeff Fuller, moving the ball to the Iowa State 19-yard line. Three plays later Jorvorskie Lane dove over from the 1-yard line to extend the Aggie lead to 35-20 with one minute left in the third quarter.

The Cyclones drove to the Aggie 29-yard line before Iowa State quarterback Austen Arnaud was sacked on two successive plays, the first by Aggie cornerback Danny Gorrer and the second by Aggie linebacker Von Miller, forcing an Arnaud fumble. Miller recovered at the Aggie 48-yard line.

It took the Aggies seven plays to score after the turnover, with Jerrod Johnson scrambling 5 yards for a touchdown to open up a 42-20 lead at the 11:27 mark in the fourth quarter. Iowa State marched 80 yards in 12 plays, with quarterback Arnaud scoring on a 9-yard run. A successful two-point conversion cut the Aggie lead to 42-28 with 7:43 left in the game.

Iowa State attempted an on-side, but A&M recovered on the Cyclone 37-yard line. After a lengthy review, the call on the field stood. Facing 3rd-and-4 at the Cyclone 8-yard line, Jerrod Johnson threw his fourth touchdown pass of the night, this to Jeff Fuller. Bullock's extra point gave the Aggies a 49-28 lead with 4:22 on the clock.

Cyclone Leonard Johnson returned the Aggie kickoff 65 yards to the Aggie 33-yard line. Two plays later Arnaud threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Collin Franklin. Mahoney's extra point cut the Aggie lead to 49-35 with 3:30 left in the game.

After an Aggie punt, Iowa State drove to the Aggie 18-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Texas A&M (3-5, 1-3) ran out the clock to preserve a wild 49-35 win over Iowa State (2-6, 0-4) to earn Mike Sherman his first Big 12 win.

It was an offensive game, with Texas A&M totalling 27 first downs and 509 yards while Iowa State rolled up 34 first downs and 574 yards.

For Texas A&M, Jerrod Johnson completed 31 of 39 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for a fifth touchdown. Jamie McCoy caught 7 passes for 110 yard and 2 TDs while brother Terrence McCoy caught 6 passes for 67 yards and 1 TD. Jeff Fuller caught 8 passes for 95 yards and 1 TD. Ryan Tannehill caught 6 passes for 78 yards. Freshman running back Cyrus Gray rushed for 69 yards and 1 TD on 14 carries.

For Iowa State, Austen Arnaud completed 26 of 41 passes for 371 yards and 1 TD and rushed for 67 yards and 1 TD on 16 carries. R.J. Sumrall caught 9 passes for 143 yards and 1 TD. Alexander Robinson rushed for 85 yards and 1 TD on 16 carries.

Texas A&M return home to face Colorado next Saturday afternoon. Colorado (4-4, 1-3) suffered a 58-0 rout at the hands of No. 15 Missouri on Saturday night.
