Coach's Corner: Cedric Ogbuehi

Allen High School gave Texas A&M two high profile commits last year to go with a state title run, and they are reloaded this year with some more star players including offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi. Websider visits with head coach Tom Westerberg about this prospect.

Alright coach, first the question surely on everyone's mind, how do you pronounce "Ogbuehi"?

"This one is actually not that bad, it is ‘Ahg-bway-hee'. Pretty much like it looks."

And what makes Cedric such a special player?

"It's probably his athleticism. He moves very well for a big guy and has a lot of power with his weight. He is a great guy to have out there on the end because he can stay with some of the faster guys, and the fact that he moves like that I think surprises a lot of people that he has the power with it too."

Did it help him that he moved originally from the defensive line?

"I think it did definitely. We moved him at first because we had a hole on our line, and we were pretty stacked at defensive line last year. We had a guy that signed with Colorado, another guy that signed with Kansas and another guy playing division II all on the defensive line, so he was the best candidate to make the switch. Obviously if you are playing defensive line you can move well, so it was good that he was that type of guy and still able to handle the offensive side."

What are Cedric's measurables?

"I don't have them in front of me, but he is somewhere in the neighborhood of 6'4" and 275 pounds."

Do you think he's done or is he still growing?

"He's young, so he's going to still grow. He's not done yet, I don't know how much more it will be but he'll grow some more."

How is his work ethic? Has he emerged as a leader on the line?

"His work ethic is great. He does everything he is asked to do and that helped him with his shift over, because he is great at learning the game. Here we are kind of known for our lineman, so I don't know if there is one leader to point to on the line, but he plays like a leader and is very confident in what he does."

Talk about how Cedric has handled this recruiting process so far.

"He's been very proactive and smart about it. He has done a lot of research, a lot. Over the winter he looked hard at all of the schools who were giving him looks, and he went to a lot of the junior days as well. Whatever decision he has made, I'm sure it is a very informed decision and he'll stick to it because he has looked at everything so carefully."

As a former Aggie have you given Cedric any words of advice about A&M?

"I haven't personally no. As a coach I try to stay out of it in that part, and just help them with whatever we need. However, we have two guys here [Uzoma Nwachukwu and Steven Terrell] who love A&M, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did a lot of convincing. They are probably the culprit if anything."
