Even with 100+ temperatures, the play at the annual 7-on-7 tournament was filled with spectacular play from young talent all over the great state of Texas.
The first day featured mainly 2A and 3A high schools schools. Some of the stand outs included Texas commit Case McCoy (Graham HS), Kendell Thompson (Carthage), Dominique Moore (Gatesville), Dedrick Westbrook (Camerom Yoe Yoeman), Edward Pope (Carthage), Dillan Fulford (Graham HS), Cam Baily (Graham HS), Kesnick Jones (Navasota), Jaxon Shipley (Brownwood), Donovan Young and Alfon Taylor (Navasota) just to name a few.
Players had to fight the heat and keep focused under the scorching conditions.
A couple of good match-ups included Cameron vs. Graham. Case McCoy looks like he is going to be the real deal for the longhorns. His team failed on their two point conversion during their second game against Cameron, but Case did a good job almost leading his team back from a half-time deficit. His teammate Dillan Fulford was Case's favorite target. Fulford blew by his defender on just about every play and caught just about everything thrown to him.
Carthage vs. Willis Point was another close game that featured two future 2011 defensive prospects. Edward Pope is a WR/DB that stood out from the rest of the competition. His 6-2 165 pound frame suits him well. He made quite a few knockdowns against a feisty Willis Point team. His teammate Kendell Thompson also drew a lot of attention from scouts. Thompson stands 6-2, 230 and if you haven't heard of him yet, you will. Kendell has great instincts and a quick first step. He needs to be developed but his skills will soon put him in the recruiting spotlight.
Overall there were a lot of new faces out there today. Plenty of guys to keep an eye out in the coming months when the 2009 season starts. Play beings at 8am tomorrow followed by the start of the Division 1 Pool.
