Garrett only played the first half of the game because the score was 41-0 going into intermission, but for a big guy, the thing that makes him special is his feet and hands. I would like to see him quicker off the ball but the 6-5 300 pounder did a outstanding job pass blocking for the future Texas Tech QB, Scotty Young. When you watch the Ryan offense you can't help but be fixed on his pure size and strength. You see a lot of kids Gramling's size and a lot of them won't be the most coordinated and will just try to bull everyone down, but Garrett does a great job at keeping his feet under him and using his hands to move his man.
Coach Montgomery is the offensive line coach for the Ryan Radiers and I had a chance to speak to him after the game. When asked if Garrett could possibly be an impact freshman for the Aggies in 2010, coach Montgomery had this to say...
"It just depends. I know A&M was really excited to get him, and they said they can't wait for him to get there, and I know he likes it because he sees it as a place to get some early playing time, but as far as a redshirt, I would say it would benefit him just because there is really no reason not to. He understands that he has to work hard to earn a starting spot especially at left tackle. That's not saying he couldn't come in and help the team right away, it just depends on if they need him. I saw that they have a true fish out there now so who knows."
The main concern I had with Gramling was his run blocking. Garrett's experience run blocking is probably the biggest thing, especially from a three-point stance. He'll be running multiple things at the next level, so the more he can practice those situations the better. Other than that though he has a really good all-around game, and he should be ready to go as long as he keeps getting stronger and working hard. Gramling reminds me a lot of Lee Grimes physically, but he is slow off the ball like Rhontae Scales. He seems to have a passion for his position that will bring a much needed intensity to the struggling Aggie offensive line.
