UTSA Remains Undefeated At Home

In one of their most complete showings of the season, UTSA led wire to wire for their third win in Conference USA play.

From the opening tip off, Phillip Jones and the rest of the UTSA Roadrunners came out ready to play.

Literally, on the game's first possession, Jones stole a pass at the top of the key and took the ball coast to coast for a score. It was an indication of the energy UTSA had on this night as they led the Rice Owls from start to finish.

UTSA shot a blistering 60% from the field in the first half. On the flip side, the Roadrunner defense forced a dozen Rice turnovers in the first stanza.

Midway through the second half, the game had a feel as though UTSA would run Rice out of the gym, but the ‘Runners shooting cooled while Rice hit a few timely buckets. The Owls cut the lead to a low as six points but couldn't get over the hump as UTSA surged to a double digit win.

Jones recorded his first career double-double on a season high 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Not to be outdone, Jordan Sims poured in a season high 19 points on 5 for 7 shooting from behind the three point arch.

A total of six players scored in double figures to lead a balanced Roadrunner attack. Edrico McGregor also recorded a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds. Devon Agusi, Hyjii Thomas, and Keon Lewis scored 11 points each.

UTSA, who's home crowd of 1,347 was the largest and most boisterous of the season, is now a perfect 3-0 in Conference USA play at the Convocation Center.

Head Coach Brooks Thompson

"Tonight we had a great crowd. We had a good home court advantage. Our guys have done a good and have stayed focused at home. It's a good league, you're going to have to play well to beat anybody."

"We came out and really set the tone early. Our guys came out focused and ready to play."

"You've got to take care of the ball. We got some points off of turnovers, that's a credit to our pressure. We've been scoring points. We've been executing our offense. We haven't been taking too many bad shots. We've been fluid in our offense."

Jordan Sims

"It was a great game, we needed it to get our confidence back after three tough losses. It was a boost for our team. The crowd came out for us tonight. We played as hard as we could the whole 40 minutes."

Phillip Jones

"Coach told us to get the ball in the paint and play inside. That was going to be the key to the game so we just executed that."

"I just try to take what the defense gives me and then make my moves."

"We had our home crowd, there was a lot of energy. When we get on the road, it's just us. So we've got to prepare for that mentally."

UTSA will next face Louisiana Tech at the Convocation Center on Saturday. Tip off is set for 3pm.
