Spring Practice Report 4.9

UTSA hit the practice fields for workout #8 of the spring season. InsideRunnerSports provides you a practice report.

UTSA completed spring practice number eight on Wednesday morning. Head Coach Larry Coker characterized the practice as a bit sloppy but acknowledged there is a bit of a grind mentality going on. Despite some relatively small mistakes, both the offense and defense continue to excel.

Here are some notes from practice:

- Tucker Carter continued to impress with his arm strength and passing abilities. Today's weather was the first non-windy we've been able to watch for quite some time and Carter took advantage throwing a ton of deep balls that hit various WRs in stride. There were at least a half a dozen balls in one on one drills between WRs and DBs that Carter threw right on the money. These were passes 35 yards + into the endzone for scores. We also saw some good action in seven on seven drills.

- Some notable catches from Carter today came from: Kenny Harrison, Kenny Bias, Earon Holmes, Aaron Grubb, Marcellus Mack, Cole Hubble, and others.

- The last 45 minutes of practice consisted of a live scrimmage. Offensively, we saw a ton of plays with WR's and RB's in motion. We also saw some jet sweeps, WR reverses, and some flanker screens. In addition to that, we did see both Tucker Carter and Austin Robinson take some shots down the field today.

- RB David Glasco II returned from injury and got the most work we've seen him get since spring began. Glasco ran well and hard.

- WR Earon Holmes returned from injury and had himself a good day catching a handful of balls. Holmes looked fresh and ready to play.

- RB Jarveon Williams continued to cement himself as a mainstay in the offense with just some solid/hard running. On one particular play, Williams made a move at the line of scrimmage, hit a hole, and it was 30 yards before he was touched again.

- Another good day turned in by the Hard Hat Defense. Several players made some plays in the backfield, most notably Cody Rogers and Blake Terry, who each made a big on third down during the scrimmage portion of practice.

- Not to be outdone, the trio of Triston Wade, Crosby Adams, and Darrien Starling all had good practices themselves, each with an interception to their names.

- Backup QB Austin Robinson continued to show flashes during practice today. The speed of the game, however, is still Robinson's biggest hurdle.

- The offense was at its best today during two minute drills, both QBs made good/quick decisions on the fly.

- OL Payton Rion was not dressed and did not practice.

- RB Jalen Rhodes underwent surgery on Tuesday for an unspecified injury. He will miss the rest of the spring.

- We had interviews with Head Coach Larry Coker, OL Josh Walker, and WR Aaron Grubb that we will post soon.

- Next media availability is on Saturday at Smithson Valley. That will be a full scrimmage that will be open to the public.
