Hoops Practice Report 11.3.14

UTSA begins the 2014-15 season with an exhibition game vs Southeastern Oklahoma State on Thursday night. InsideRunnerSports checks in at practice for the latest on the Roadrunners.

UTSA practiced for over two hours on Monday afternoon as they prepare for the 2014-15 campaign. With the exhibition game later this week, the 'Runners are working to improve from their disappointing season last year Here are our practice notes:

- Senior Foward Jeromie Hill's return to the offense will be extremely noticeable. Back from a knee injury that kept him out all of last season, Hill may already be in mid-season form as he looks as though he will emerge as the team's leading scorer.

- The speed of the UTSA offense looks as though it will be more faster than in past seasons. With young, athletic players up and down the roster, the offense really excels in the open court. We saw many transition plays today where the ball rarely touched the floor.

- UTSA is also implementing a new offense this season that is more motion-based. There does not seem to be a lot of learning curve involved with the half-court sets involved.

- The Lewis Brothers (Guards Larry Lewis and Keon Lewis - not related) both excel in half court sets. Both have a knack to getting to the rim and creating their own shots. They also both have a very good knowledge of the offensive system.

- A little more than half of the practice was spent on defensive drills. With not a lot of size on the roster, players ran through a myraid of quick defensive sets. A little surprising that we didn't see any zone defense. Look for the 'Runners to use a quick-moving, switching defense.

- It's still unclear who will be in the starting lineup on Thursday night but it appears the 'Runners will go with a three-guard lineup consisting of Larry Lewis, Keon Lewis, Ryan Bowie, Jeromie Hill and Kaj-Bjorn Sherman. But also in the mix and seeing a lot of time with the first team is Austin Karrer.

- Newcomers Edwin Olympio, Christian Wilson, and Austin Karrer each showed of their athleticism during fast breaks. All three will add another level of speed and athleticism to 'Runner's offense.

- Forward James Williams was limited in drills and may not be available on Thursday.

- Forward Phillip Jones did not practice and is out indefinitely. Jones will not be available Thursday for UTSA.
