Basketball Commit #1

On Monday UTSA Basketball Coach Brooks Thompson picked up the first commitment to his 2015 recruiting class with an out of state recruit.

On Monday, UTSA Head Coach Brooks Thompson took a trip to Oklahoma to visit Tulsa Memorial Forward A.J. Cockrell. The trip paid off.

"Brooks Thompson came to school after practice on Monday," said Cockrell. "I talked to him right there and I committed on the spot."

Thompson, a native of Oklahoma, was in the area to visit Cockrell just a few weeks after the recruit visited UTSA's campus.

"They have a good program," Cockrell said. "The coaches seemed genuine. I talked a lot with Phillip Jones and George Matthews and they all kind of convinced UTSA was the place for me."

The 6'8" 215lb forward held other offers from South Dakota State, Sam Houston State, and Abilene Christian University.

Right now, Cockrell is a little under-sized as a power forward. However, he is only 17 years old and is likely not finished growing. Despite that, he does have some versatility.

"They told me I was going to be a great rebounder," said Cockrell. "I can play the low post. I can see myself as at the 3/4/5 playing the short corner and low post."

UTSA has been recruiting Cockrell since the summer.

"I talked a lot to Coach Guster, he called me the most. I formed a close connection with him," said Cockrell.

Last season, Cockrell averaged near double digits scoring 12pts and grabbing 9 rebounds per game.

The early signing period begins on Nov. 12. Cockrell is expected to sign his LOI then.
