Hoops Lands 2nd Commit

UTSA basketball has landed a nice surprise right as the early signing period comes to an end on Wednesday. This 6'7" 205lb combo forward committed to UTSA and is signing his LOI.

Nick Allen is a 6'7" 205lb forward from Willow Canyon High School who just picked up an offer from UTSA last Thursday. The 'Runners moved quickly to see if the Arizona talent was legitimately interested and he was. The next step was to take an official visit, and two days later he was on campus.

"I got there Saturday morning and left Sunday evening. I didn't want to commit before I went on my visit. When I got on campus, I just got this feeling, this is me. I liked the look of everything. What really set everything apart from all the other colleges was the way I was treated. Coach Thompson, Reneger, O'Dowd, they take really good care of their guys," said Allen.

He chose UTSA over interest from Illinois-Chicago, San Jose State, Wyoming and others. Earlier this spring, Boise State and Grand Canyon University were other programs that had shown interest as well.

His hard work on the floor is what led him to being a wanted prospect. Founder of ArizonaPreps.com and "Godfather" of Arizona basketball, Anthony Ray, has Allen as the best available prospect in the Grand Canyon State for the 2015 class. A player who can play the small or power forward position. He will use his athleticism to get to the hoop, will use a nice mid range jumper and can finish with authority above the rim. Saying a bunch of West Coast schools were ready to bounce on him after he qualified.

UTSA Head Coach Brooks Thompson plans on playing Allen as a small forward with the possibility of flexing into a stretch power forward, also known as a stretch four, where he can be used out on the perimeter to take advantage of his quick step against bigger opponents. For Nick, this is where he feels most comfortable at and the spot where he wants to be.

Off the court, Allen has been working hard to make sure his academics are in order. So far this semester he is holding steady with a 3.0 GPA. He's taken his entrance exams, is set to graduate later in May, and once the semester breaks in December, he's expecting to be fully qualified.

Allen committed Tuesday morning to the UTSA staff and will be holding his signing ceremony Wednesday morning at Willow Canyon, where he will officially sign his letter of intent. Allen will be the second signee of the 2015 class for UTSA, joining power forward A.J. Cockrell who signed last Thursday. The 'Runners will have at least one more scholarship available going into the April regular signing period.
