'Runners Outlast Middle Tennessee

UTSA Basketball wins a big game at home vs Middle Tennessee. Here is our game recap.

Behind strong execution down the stretch, UTSA downed Middle Tennessee 69-58 Thursday night in the Convocation Center.

Four 'Runners scored in double figures led by Center Kaj-Bjorn Sherman's game high 20 points. Sherman scored 17 of this 20 points in the second half.

"It was kind of crazy. I just took what the defense was giving me," said Sherman.

After controlling most of the first half, UTSA went cold toward the end of the first stanza. Middle Tennessee took advantage building a 69-58 lead at the break.

"We executed and didn't give up second chance points, I thought that was the biggest thing," Head Coach Brooks Thompson said. "They never really scored well on their initial shot, it was always the second and third opportunities. We eliminated a lot of that in the second half. Our guys deserved to win."

Middle Tennessee had their way with UTSA down low out-rebounding the 'Runners 40-32 and having more points in the paint 34-28. But UTSA clamped down in the second half, holding the Blue Raiders nearly 8 minutes without a field goal.

"In the first half they definitely got a hold of us," Sherman said. "We were able to get ourselves together and were able to come out on top."

Forward Jeromie Hill recorded his fourth double-double of the season by scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. In the first half, Hill surpassed the 1,500 point mark to become only the second player in program history to record 1,500 points and 700 rebounds.

Ryan Bowie pitched in 16 points while Keon Lewis added 10 points as the 'Runners improve their record to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in Conference USA play.

"I think we're starting to figure out our roles on the team," said Sherman. "Not only that, we're buying into the offense and defense. All we can keep hoping for is to keep on improving because we have yet to hit our peak."

UTSA returns to action Saturday vs UAB. Tip off at the Convocation Center is set for 2pm.
