Safety Becomes Commit #1

Safety Innis Gaines became commitment #1 to UTSA’s 2016 recruiting class on Tuesday. He talks about committing.

Just over a week ago, West Brook Defensive Back Innis Gaines was offered by UTSA. On Wednesday, Gaines committed to the ‘Runners 2016 recruiting class.

“I talked to my mom and my coaches. I felt like UTSA was just the right school for me, so I committed,” said Gaines. “It feels great to be a Roadrunner.”

The Beaumont native held other offers are from: McNeese St, SFA, Tulsa, North Texas, Eastern Michigan, Northwestern State, and New Mexico. But in the end, the impact of the UTSA coaching staff made the difference.

“I loved the coaching staff,” said Gaines. “The way they talked to me and recruited me, you could tell they were all in it for me.”

At 6’2” and 191lbs, Gaines is tabbed to play the Free Safety position at UTSA.

“My best skill is getting to the ball,” Gaines said last week. “I’ve got great ball skills. I’m good at coverage and good at tackling.”

Gaines has yet to visit UTSA’s campus. He had initially thought he could visit this weekend but will instead visit later on this summer. He camped recently with Texas and is scheduled to be at UTSA’s camp in San Antonio in July.

Gaines is the first commitment to UTSA’s 2016 recruiting class.
