Close To Home An Option

Just a few weeks ago, UTSA offered a top local point guard for the '16 class. Late Saturday night, they offered another top local point guard, but for the '17 class, and they're teammates at Brandeis High School.

In the span of 24 hours, Brandeis point guard Kobe Magee picked up three new offers, bringing the juniors offer count to four: UTSA, UTEP, Long Island, and Sam Houston State. With one more week left in the "Live" recruiting period, don't be surprised if he pulls in more.

It was well into the night on Saturday when Kobe's phone rang, and on the other end was UTSA Associate Head Coach Dan O'Dowd. The entire UTSA Staff had been watching him at the GASO in Duncanville and had some good news for him.

"Coach O'Dowd just called like 30 minutes ago and he told me that the whole UTSA staff got to see me. They really want me to be a part of the program. That's how it pretty much went down, and hopefully they can get me to campus, a shoot around, and sit down and talk," said Magee.

Kobe is no stranger to UTSA as he was on campus for a few games this past season and has been in the Convocation center plenty of other times.

Over the weekend, Magee and his AAU teammates participated in the GASO and came away with a couple of losses after being placed in a super pool. It was a good experience as they played bigger and better competition. His SA Spurs teammate is another 2017 UTSA target in Marco Anthony (Holmes HS).

With only a few weeks of summer left before the start of his junior year, he's continuing to work on his game off and on the court. A priority for him is to get bigger and add strength to his 5'10" 145lb frame.

"As soon as my sophomore year ended I've been in the gym lifting three days a week trying to get bigger. I want to be bigger and stronger. Last year I felt like opponents could get physical or bully me when I drove to the hole and I really want to work on that this year by becoming stronger," said Magee.

This recruiting cycle has been completely different for UTSA. Head Coach Brooks Thompson and his staff are extending offers much earlier and going after top local talent. In this bunch of top prospects that they'd like to keep home is Magee, and for those that don't know, Brandeis High School is all of five minutes away from campus. The distance is a factor that is making UTSA that much more interesting for him.

"It really interests me, especially because I know my mom could come see me play every game. I'm real close to my mom. It's real good knowing that a school close by has offered so my mom could come see my play," said Magee.

Only going to be a junior, Kobe will still remain open minded and go through the process, but he reiterated that it's real good for UTSA and all the local talent to be targeted by the hometown D1 team and it's something that could pay off much quicker than some would think.

"I'm real good friends with all those guys, Marco and I, we play on the Spurs. Playing together and building a program that's something I've never really thought about, but that would be something good to see all the San Antonio kids playing together. It is a good thing that UTSA is start recruiting more locally, that looks good," said Magee.

UTSA now has a total of 5 legit offers out locally for 2016 and 2017 prospects.
