Williams Ready to Carry Load

Junior RB Jarveon Williams is set to carry the load in 2015. He talks about the upcoming season.

UTSA RB Jarveon Williams interview:

What’s it like being the only RB with significant experience? “I’m in a great position because I was able to learn from those older guys. Now that I’m stepping up to the plate to become a leader, it’s a lot easier for me than it was for those guys because they didn’t have anyone to look up to, they didn’t have anybody to guide them. So now I’m able to take some of the stuff that they gave me and share it with some of the younger guys. So I’m in a great position.”

What did you learn from the older players that have left? “It just helped me become a better running back, become more patient and just execute more. Yes I have God-given talent, but when it comes to football, you’ve got to know more. You’ve got to study film, you’ve got to be patient, you’ve got to get a lot of reps in. Being able to watch those guys has really helped me develop as a running back.”

Is this season almost like a fresh start?
“It’s a tremendous opportunity because we get the chance to maybe go to the first bowl game. We get a chance to win conference. We get a chance to make history for UTSA. Unfortunately the older guys weren’t able to do that but we have the ability to take what they gave us and put our own stamp on it.”

How much extra conditioning is required for the new up-tempo offense”
“It’s doesn’t affect me specially, I’m just like the other 10 guys on the field so I’ve got to be in shape just like everyone else.”

Will you be more of a leader this season?
“I’ve accepted that. I felt like I did a good job of that in the spring. Like I said, I’m just taking what the older guys showed me and passing it down to the young guys.”

How are you feeling physically?
“I feel good, I feel amazing. I’m ready to play some football.”

What’s it like having Jalen Rhodes healthy?
“No one wants to go through injuries, no one wants to miss time from playing football. At the end of the day, this is what we love, this is why we’re here. It’s not fun sitting out. I’ve had to do that a couple of times. It’s good to have him back, he’s working hard, and we’re ready to go.”
