Egwuagu to Lead Hard Hat D

Junior Safety Michael Egwuagu is now one of the leaders of the Hard Hat Defense. The Austin-native talks about fall practices.

UTSA Safety Michael Egwuagu interview:

How are fall practices going?
“It’s fun to be out here with the guys, flying around. It’s good to be out here getting the rust off of us.”

Are you going to become more of a leader this season?
“I would say so. We’ve got a lot of new guys coming in so it’s up to guys like me who have been here and have been playing. Like I got to play as a true freshman. I know a lot of guys are hoping to come in and get the true-freshman accolades. They look at me and are asking me questions. With that comes an automatic leadership role.”

What are the goals of the defensive this year?
“On the defensive side, we’re more experienced. Everybody is expected to be a leader, so that’s what I want out of my defensive guys, stepping on the field, not being timid, and just playing with a lot of confidence.”

How talented is this defense?
“We have a lot of talent. There’s a lot of guys that can fly around make big plays. I feel like that’ll be big and be able to help us out.”

What are you seeing with the QBs?
“The biggest thing about our quarterbacks is that they are composed. Bogie (Blake Bogenschutz) and Russ (Russell Bellomy) are very composed. Especially Russ, you can’t rattle him for anything.”

How can the defense create more turnovers?
“The biggest thing with that is consistency. We have to focus on the little things that have led us to getting turnovers in games and try to replicate that. But we’ve got to take it one day at a time and not getting too far ahead of ourselves. It’s all about the focus.”
