Okotcha Wants to Win

Preseason All Conference USA CB Bennett Okotcha is tabbed as one of the Hard Hat Defense’s leaders. The senior talks about fall practice, starting QB Blake Bogenschutz, and the upcoming season.

UTSA CB Bennett Okotcha interview:

How have fall practices been going?
“It’s been great. It’s good to get back at it with the guys. We’re a big family out here. It’s competitive. We’ve got some new faces so we’re trying to see what some guys can do with pads. We’ve been anticipating this all summer so it’s good to be back out there.”

How’s the speed on this team?
“It’s definitely going to be fast. The coaches did a great job recruiting. This is the most speed I’ve seen out here since I’ve been here. It’s fast. That’s the way we’ve got to play. A lot of times, we don’t have the same size as other teams, and that’s the advantage we can have.”

Is the new offense helping improve the defense?
“It’s helping us tremendously. Everybody has NASCAR package. Some teams go fast all of the time. We’re working at premium levels. We’re getting great looks getting ready for the games.”

How has starting QB Blake Bogenschutz looked?
“He looks like a pro. He’s not going to throw an interception. He’s not going to fumble the ball. He’s not going to make bad decisions. He’s mature way beyond his years. He’s the best quarterback I’ve seen play or played with before, even back at OU playing with Landry Jones. Blake is extremely smart and he’s confident. He doesn’t force things. He’s a quarterback who will never lose you a game. He’ll manage a game and win you a game. And that’s all you can ask for in a quarterback. He knows where he’s going with the ball. You can tell he studies. And that’s how you make plays, preparation. You make plays in the film room, you make plays on the practice, and then in the game, it just comes to you.”

What are your goals this season?
“I just want to win. Same thing as last year, same thing as the year before. I just want to go to a bowl game and win a conference championship. That’s always been the goal and expectations and that hasn’t changed for me and my teammates.”
