UTSA keys to victory vs Southern Miss:
RB Jarveon Williams had his worst game of the season last week vs La Tech. The Bulldogs essentially stacked the box and took away the run from UTSA. But in the second half, that defensive strategy opened up some passing lanes that allowed the ‘Runner offense to get going Regardless of his production, Williams needs to be a focal point of the offense for them to come away with the win.
Move The Chains
Southern Miss isn’t a great defense. In fact, if they have a deficiency, it’s defending QBs who can run. Hampered by a bad ankle last week, QB Dalton Sturm was limited in his running ability. After getting treatment all week, Sturm should be fresh and we may see more of his running abilities this week. The Golden Eagles have give up a lot of yards of offense this season. UTSA will need to get their offense kicked into gear early and often to be successful.
In any game turnovers are key. But what UTSA has faced this season have been worst-case scenario situations. Pick six’s, fumble returns for a touchdown, and redzone miscues. All of these are “back-breaking” mistakes. Last week, QB Dalton Sturm threw two interceptions in the first three possessions of the game. One of those was returned for a touchdown and another setup a field goal. UTSA simply cannot win making those types of mistakes so they need to avoid them in order to come out of Hattiesburg with a W.
