UTSA downs Rice Saturday night

UTSA played one of their best games of the season and set multiple school records as they downed Rice 34-24 Saturday night in the Alamodome.

First Win Over Rice: After three consecutive losses to Rice the last three years, UTSA was finally able to beat the Owls. The loss means Rice will no longer be eligible for a bowl berth. The win improves UTSA’s record to 3-8 overall and 3-4 in CUSA play.

Offensive Explosion: UTSA scored a season-high 28 first half points. The ‘Runners’ 34 points was a season high. For the third time in the last four games, UTSA’s offense racked up more than 400 yards of total offense.

Jarveon Surpass 1,000, Ties TD Record: RB Jarveon Williams became UTSA’s first-ever 1,000 yard rusher. Williams’ two touchdowns also made his season total 8, which tied the program-record for most rushing touchdowns in the a single season (Evans Okotcha 2012). He finished the game with 163 yards on 22 rushes.

Neill Breaks Sack/Ties TFL Records: DE Jason Neill recorded two sacks Saturday night. It was sack number 8.5 and tackle for loss number 11. Both stats are program records for most in a single season.

Thomas Ties TD Record: WR Kerry Thomas’ 23 yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was his 4th TD catch of the season. That tied the program-record for most touchdown receptions in a single season. Thomas tied David Morgan.

Morgan Breaks TD Record: TE David Morgan broke his own record on a 19 yard third quarter pass reception. It was his 5th TD of the season. That broke the record he had with Thomas and three other players.

Okotcha Ties INT Record: CB Bennett Okotcha intercepted his fourth pass of the season. That tied the program record for most touchdowns in a single season with Erik Brown (2012) and Triston Wade (2012 and 2014).

Davenport with Key Plays: DE Marcus Davenport had 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss for the Hard Hat Defense. There was a critical stretch in the third quarter when Davenport had back to back TFLs to halt a Rice drive. Davenport finished tied for the team-high in total tackles with 10.

Sturm Rebounds: After playing his worst game of the season last week at Charlotte, QB Dalton Sturm had a very nice game. Sturm’s final line: 9 for 13 for 189 yards passing with 2 touchdowns. He also rushed 17 times for 50 yards with another touchdown.
