Q&A with MTSU Head Coach Rick Stockstill

Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill spoke with media earlier this week about the upcoming game vs UTSA.

Q&A with MTSU Head Coach Rick Stockstill

What’s the attitude of the team?
“We celebrated just as much as beating North Texas as we did after any game this year. Winning is hard and everybody wants to look at a record and say that you should beat a team by this many points. I told everyone that FAU which only had two wins was going to be a tough game and then they went on to take Florida to overtime. Winning is hard and sometimes people don't realize that. We do and we enjoy every win. We understand that you enjoy it for 24 hours, but then you come back to work on Sunday. You have reset the button and it's time to get focused for your next opponent. I like our mindset for this upcoming game.”

Did you like your defensive effort last week?
“One of our goals coming into that game was to start fast on both sides of the ball and I thought we did that. We got stops early and didn't give up plays. We kept the ball in front of us and jumped out 21-0. I thought our defense played really well and I thought our coaches on defense had a nice plan. Our team has responded well with what we have asked them to do. They did make some plays later in the game after we made some subs, but I am proud of our defensive effort.”

What do you see from UTSA on film?
“They play really well at home and have had some close losses. They have won the last two games and beat Rice at home for the first time-ever. They are getting a little confidence and a little juice to them and it's going to be their Senior Day, so you know you are going to get their best shot. Their quarterback is settling in and runs a lot better than I thought he could by watching him. He is accurate and makes good decisions. He has good players around him. I think their running back is special. He has good speed and wiggle. He can make you miss because he is a jitterbug back there. He is a physical running back. Their offensive line is big so they do a good job of keeping the ball. Their offensive is very balanced. Defensively, they have an end that has eight sacks and they are big upfront. Their linebackers run pretty good and their backend is leading the conference with 14 interceptions. They are sound in the kicking game so their record is not indicative to how good this team is.”

Do you worry about complacency after reaching bowl eligibility?
“Are we going to relax or let our guard down now that we are bowl eligible? Heck no and I can promise you that. We will have a great edge when we tee that thing off on Saturday. Being bowl eligible was not our goal. We haven't accomplished our goal yet.”
