UTSA falls to UTPB 90-85

UTSA lost their home-opener on Sunday to UT Permian Basin 90-85.

Game Recap of UTSA’s 90-85 loss to UTPB

Porous Defense: UTSA struggled Sunday vs a very athletic UT Permian Basin team. The biggest issue was the ‘Runners dribble drive defense. The Falcons got into the lane easily against UTSA. UTPB, a Division II school, also found success behind the arc making 12 three pointers.

Close One: Trialing by three points with about :30 seconds let, UTSA raced up the court. But instead of trying a game-tying three pointer, the ‘Runners elected to attempt a quick shot. UTSA was unable to convert and UTPB scored the final points on a break away layup.

Bowie Leads ‘Runners: Ryan Bowie had another superb game scoring 27 points. Bowie also grabbed 13 rebounds, which is a career-high. He led four players in double digits Sunday. AJ Cockrell had 16 points while Gino Littles and George Matthews added 10 points each.

Crockrell Has Career Game: Forward AJ Cockrell came off the bench Sunday and set two career marks. The Tulsa-native’s 16 points and 7 rebounds were career highs.

Bobcats Up Next: UTSA will practice Monday and Tuesday in preparation to play IH-35 Rival Texas State on Wednesday in San Marcos.

Head Coach Brooks Thompson:
Is the defense the biggest issue?
“Period. There’s nothing else you can say. Coming into this season I thought we’d struggle to score early. We’re not struggling to score, we can really score. The problem is that we can’t get stops. We have to grow as a team.”

Guard Ryan Bowie:
You’re playing pretty well, are you in the zone?
“I’m playing good but I feel like it’s not enough. At the end of the day, I want to win. I’d rather score 15 and get the win any day.”
