As of 5:40pm Wednesday, UTSA has announced seven signees. Below is a breakdown of the new Roadrunners:
CB Brenndan Johnson
6-0/185lbs Naval Prep/Waco Midway HS
Originally from the Corpus Christi area, Johnson comes to UTSA by way of the Naval Prep Academy and Midway High School in Waco. A signee to Navy, Johnson’s decided the military life was not for him. He’ll make San Antonio his new home in January. His addition adds an element of depth to UTSA’s defensive backfield. *Note: Johnson is not considered a Junior College player since he has all of his eligibility remaining.
OL Tanner Myers
6-7/300lbs Coffeyville JC (Kansas)
UTSA finds some size in the Midwest with Juco signee Tanner Myers. A legit 6-7 and 300lbs, Myers instantly becomes one of the largest linemen on the roster. With good footwork and a nice frame, Myers will get to work with Offensive Line Coach Mike Markuson this spring to fine-tune his skills. Look for Myers to come in and compete for immediate playing time.
LB Leslie Maruo
6-0/225lbs Hutchinson JC (Kansas)
Maruo’s signing was likely the biggest of the day as UTSA desperately needed to shore up depth at the LB position. Maruo’s skill-set aligns perfectly with what Defensive Coordinator and LB’s Coach Neal Neathery likes to do. Spring practices will be important as Maruo will need to learn UTSA’s schemes. Barring any setbacks, he should also come in and compete for immediate playing time.
TE Austin Blake-Smith
6-5/240lbs Ventura JC (California)
UTSA’s offense will look to fill a huge void with the graduation of David Morgan. That’s where Austin Blake-Smith comes into play. A lengthy 6-5, Blake-Smith is versatile enough to lineup on the end of the line or take advantage of a smaller defender in the slot. He’ll have big shoes to fill but look for the California product to hit the ground running once he arrives in Texas in January.
LB Anthony Hickey
6-1/235lbs Saddleback JC (California)
Hickey was the newest of target of the group as he was just offered Tuesday. It didn’t take long for him to decide to become a Roadrunner. Along with Maruo, Hickey’s signing were probably the two biggest of the day as UTSA now has something they sorely lacked in 2015, depth at linebacker.
CB Derrick Worthy
5-11/175lbs Orange Coast JC (California)
With the graduation of two starters UTSA sorely needed a Juco corner. From California to Texas, Worthy looks to follow in former starter Trevor Baker’s footsteps. What Worthy lacks in size, he makes it up with technique and tenacity. Worthy, who will arrive in San Antonio next month, could cement himself as one of the leaders of the CB unit with a strong spring.
OL Stefan Beard
6-4/315lbs Navarro JC (Texas)
A former Baylor commit, Beard brings added size and a physical nature to UTSA’s offensive line. He’s versatile enough to play either guard or tackle. Look for Coach Markuson to see what Beard can do early in spring practices. Along with the addition of Myers, UTSA has upgraded size and talent along the o-line.
Any additions and updates will be posted in the forum...
