Johnson was originally recruited out of South Grand Prairie High School where he was a Scout.com three-star recruit. He joined Sam Houston State as part of the 2012 recruiting class. In 2013 he redshirtted before starting the last two seasons for the Bearkats.
In 2015, Johnson was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the year where he threw for 2,216 yards with 18 touchdowns and two interceptions while having a 57.5 pass completion percentage.
