UTSA Football Fall Report: Day 1

UTSA hit the practice fields for day one of fall camp. Head Coach Frank Wilson is using split-squad sessions the first few days of practice. We provide you a report.

UTSA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT FOR 8.5.16

DAY ONE: There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the program as fall practices begin. Coach Wilson summarized the first day as a good one: “It was good. The kids embraced it, they went out and competed. It was a very, very productive practice.”

SPLIT SQUAD PRACTICES: Coach Wilson called it an “acclimation period.” Essentially, the entire team has been spilt into two groups. A younger group practices together while an older groups works strength and conditioning and vice versa. Friday afternoon was the veteran’s group first practice while the younger group worked with strength and conditioning. The younger group practiced earlier in the day. Coach Wilson on the strategy: “They get our undivided attention when everyone is at their own practice. The practices allow each group the attention they need to develop.” UTSA will continue the acclimation period for the next three days.

O-LINE DRAWS PRAISE: When asked which position group stood out the most on the first day, Coach Wilson mentioned the play of the offensive line saying: “I though the offensive line did a good job of jelling together.”

LINEBACKERS GET MENTIONED: A huge concern on UTSA’s defense is the depth at the linebacker position. Coach Wilson says he likes what he saw from the group: “I liked our linebackers today. I thought those guys moved well in both practices and showed that we’ll be able to have some depth at that position.”

HEAT A FACTOR: The official temperature at the start of the afternoon practice was 96 degrees with a heat index on the field of over 100 degrees. Coach Wilson praised the training and nutrition staff for preparing the players: “We’ve added our fruits to our break sessions where they get fruits that contain water.”

QB BATTLE CONTINUES: Dalton Sturm and Jared Johnson split reps in no particular order Friday. Coach Wilson said there is no order just yet. They were the only QBs who worked out in the afternoon practice session. Coach Wilson on the play of his QBs: “They both looked well. We kind of just rotated them in. They went every other play or every other series in any order.

JOHNSON TALKS FOR THE FIRST TIME: Graduate transfer quarterback Jared Johnson met with media for the first time since he came to UTSA earlier in the summer. Johnson said his first practice as a good one: “It was a good day, we got a lot of work done. I think we took a step forward as a team, I know I did. I’m very comfortable. I feel like I know the guys very well. I’m still in the middle of learning the offense.”

JOHNSON ON THE QB COMPETITION: Jared Johnson weighed in on the competition for QB1 with Dalton Sturm saying: “We’re competing everyday. Dalton did some great things today, I think I did some pretty good things. Everyday is a competition. I’m putting my best foot forward, he’s putting his best foot forward. That’s what it is.”

PADS ON TUESDAY: The Roadrunners practiced in jerseys and pants on Friday. They are expected to continue to do that the next few days. The team is expected to dress out in full pads beginning on Tuesday.
