A bird landed Friday afternoon for UTSA. Denton Ryan DE/OLB Javaris Steward committed to UTSA Football’s 2017 recruiting class.
Javaris is a Scout.com 4-star prospect. He is rated as the #3 Outside Linebacker in the state of Texas and the Midlands region. He is the highest rated high school recruit UTSA football has ever landed.
Scout.com National Recruiting Analyst Greg Biggins on Steward: “Steward is a big bodied linebacker who could grow in to a defensive end in college. He's already a talented pass rusher who can explode off the edge and has the speed to run down plays from behind. He's strong at the point of attack, solid in the run game and has a very high ceiling. Depending on how much bigger he gets will determine exactly where on the field he lines up but he's a guy who will make plays for you no matter where he's at.”
Biggins lists Steward’s strengths as: aggressiveness, athleticism, size, and tough. Areas to improve: lateral movement.
Steward played his sophomore season at Denton Ryan but then moved west to play his junior campaign for Pomona HS. He returns to Texas for his senior season.
Scout.com Regional Analyst Gabe Brooks on Steward: “The 6-foot-2 1/2, 230-pounder has a prototype frame for the edge rusher role in a 3-4 defense. He's athletic enough to play the flats if needed, while his time at Ryan as a 4-3 end makes him accustomed to playing on the line of scrimmage. Steward is a former UCLA commit who played his junior year in California, but has moved back to Denton Ryan for his senior season. He's raw, but the four-star prospect has a ton of potential.”
Steward will play defensive end for UTSA.
In addition to UCLA, Steward was also briefly committed to USC. He held offers from Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, USC, UCLA, and Washington.
Steward is the 14th commit to UTSA Football’s 2017 recruiting class. You can see an overview on all of the commits by clicking here: LINK
