UTSA Football Practice Report for Wednesday, October 5, 2016

Focused on Finishing: It’s been the theme all week, finishing games. On Wednesday, Head Coach Frank Wilson said that will be the theme for the rest of the season: “That’s the theme from here on out, 60 minutes of hell. Finish, go finish, finish the job that we start.”

Filo More Involved: During any given practice session you will see (and hear) Strength and Conditioning Coach Ryan Filo. His energy and enthusiaism when on the field is unmatched. On Wednesday, we learned that Filo has been a little more involved this week. “Now, towards the end of practice, Coach Filo comes up and stops practice and everybody holds up their four fingers,” Safety Michael Egwuagu said. “It’s fourth quarter, that symbolizes finishing and giving that extra boost of energy.”

Players Buy In: With an emphasis being placed on finishing, sometimes a message like that can come across as coach speak to players. But Safety Michael Egwuagu says he feels like the team has bought in. “That extra boost of mental focus for the last stretch of practice is going to transfer into the games. I really think everyone is buying in to the finishing.”

Slowing Mullens: Southern Miss QB Nick Mullens enters Saturday's game as one of the best quarterbacks in Conference USA. In five games this season, Mullens has thrown for 1,504 yards with 13 touchdowns. Following practice, Wilson had some high praise for Mullens: “He’s legitimate. He’ll have an opportunity to play on Sundays. We think he’s a very good quarterback. We’re going to try to do some things to contain him.”

Scouting Southern Miss: Saturday will be the third all-time between UTSA and Southern Miss. The series is tied 1-1. Senior Safety Michael Egwuagu is well aware of Southern Miss’ offense having seen them last two years. Egwuagu on preparing for the Golden Eagles: “We came in today and were able to game plan them. I remember those guys play tough. You have to bring your hat every single play, you can’t take plays off. So that’s what we’re expecting, a tough game.”

Offense To Help Defense: When facing an offensive unit as prolific as Southern Miss, the question about a good offense being a good defense always seems to come up. Wilson on the offense helping the defense: “We can do things to help our offense, by getting first downs and moving the chains. That’s our intent, to be able to have drives that sustain.

Sturm to Start: On Monday UTSA released their updated two-deep depth chart. It showed Dalton Sturm would be the starter. On Wednesday, Wilson reinforced that saying Sturm would start. He added that both quarterbacks have had a good week of practice so far: “They’ve looked well. They did really good today. We’re doing some things that benefit them best and caters to their strengths. I think it will be very productive for us.”

Moving Forward: With a 1-3 record a third of the way through the season, Coach Wilson was asked how the team has been able to move forward: “It’s about the next game, this next opponent, who is a quality opponent. Our focus is totally on them. What’s happened in the past is behind us. We’re looking forward.”

Fan Support Needed: Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 11am. With UTSA on a three game losing streak, Wilson called out to fans for support this week: “We need our fan support, our kids thrive on it. I think it’s a tremendous part of our ability to play well.”
