Lucas O’Brien drained a game-winning three pointer with nine seconds left as UTSA held off FIU 69-67 Thursday night in Miami.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” Head Coach Steve Henson said on his post game radio show. “They (FIU) made their run, but we hung in there.”
UTSA played well for the majority of the game building as much as a 20 point lead in the first half. But the Panthers would roar back and take a lead late in the second half.
“They took us out of our offense,” said Henson. “We were searching down the stretch. But our guys kept plugging away. I’m really proud of our guys.”
In the final minutes the game, UTSA clamped down holding FIU down the stretch of the game. With the Panthers holding 67-66 lead late in the game, the Roadrunners would bring the ball down the court and find O’Brien for the game winner.
“Lucas was good all night long,” Henson said. “He delivered.”
O’Brien would hit five three pointers on the game.
“It just happened that I got open,” said O’Brien. “I’ve been going pretty well, I’m confident with it and just kept shooting.”
Both Jeff Beverly and Lucas O’Brien would each scored 17 points for the Roadrunners
The win is UTSA’s second on the road this season. The win also clinches a berth in the Conference USA Tournament next month.
The Roadrunners overall record improves to 12-16 overall and 7-8 in CUSA play. UTSA is back in action Saturday at FAU. That’s a 6pm tipoff.
