Charlotte’s Jon Davis nailed a three pointer at the buzzer to give the 49ers a 76-75 win over UTSA Thursday night in the Convo.
The Roadrunners held an eight point lead at the three minute mark. Charlotte would then go on 9-0 run to re-take the lead. The game would go back and forth several times down’ the stretch but in the end, it came down to one play.
“It’s tough,” Head Coach Steve Henson said. “The guys feel terrible and they should. We did a lot of good things but we just didn’t defend well enough.”
It was a back and forth affair between the two teams. The game featured 28 lead changes and 11 ties.
“Losing like that is especially tough,” UTSA Guard Austin Karrer said. “You think about all of the little things during the game that could have got you that one point.”
Uncharacteristically, UTSA struggled defensively allowing Charlotte to shooting 55% from the field.
“People are going to be talking about the last shot but we’ll go back and look at all of the shots that led up to that,” said Henson. “They shot in the 50’s (5) both halves. We just have to lock up and guard better.”
Henson added that Charlotte should be credited for play well offensively.
“They’re a really good offensive team,” said Henson. “They made plays. That doesn’t happen night in and night out in our league, but it wasn’t one we’re going to be proud of on the defensive end.”
UTSA was led by Jeff Beverly’s 14 points, but he struggled throughout the night to find consistency as he spent all game in foul trouble. Point Guards Giovanni De Nicolao and Gino Littles added 12 and 11 points respectively.
UTSA’s overall record falls to 12-18 and 7-10 in CUSA. The Roadrunners close out the 2016-17 regular season Saturday when then host UAB. Tip off is set for 3pm.
