Linebacker is another position that is deep for the Roadrunners headed into spring practices. The group is led by All-American Middle Linebacker Josiah Tauaefa and returning starter La’Kel Bass. But is it only a two-man show at LB?
Will other LBs play a role?
Josiah Tauaefa more than proved his worth at MLB last season. Quietly, La’Kel Bass had a terrific season in his own right. With players like Marcos Curry, Les Maruo, and Anthony Hickey on the roster, do other LBs see the field?
UTSA enters spring practices in good spot at the linebacker position. As a redshirt freshmen in 2016, Josiah Tauaefa made splash in his first season as a Linebacker. The converted defensive lineman led UTSA in tackles and was among the team leaders in sacks, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, and QB Hurries. In his shadows, OLB La’Kel Bass had a very good season himself. These two players are the undisputed leaders of the linebacking corps. Barring injury, this duo should continue to be a formidable force for the ‘Runners. In the backup roles is where the question are. Marcos Curry is a solid division one linebacker who has seen his fair share of snaps in his career. Curry more than deserves in any snaps that come his way. But what about Maruo and Hickey? We haven’t seen much from either of them since they arrived last season. For these two players, this spring will be about seeing if either can develop as a quality backup.
