Hoping to hear their names called in the NFL Draft, Michael Egwuagu and Jarveon Williams led a gathering of 10 hopefuls working out Tuesday in front of 24 NFL scouts at UTSA's annual Pro Day.
Egwuagu and Williams supplied the leadership that boosted UTSA to its first bowl game last fall. Now they've moved on to the next phase of their career.
Egwuagu said he did better than he thought he would.
He said he ran a couple of 40-yard dashes in the 4.5-second range, with one scout telling he ran a 4.49.
Egwuagu recorded 19 repetitions on the bench press of 225 pounds and broad jumped 10-1.
"So, I think I had a really good day," he said.
Williams, UTSA's all-time rushing leader, weighed in at 202 pounds. He recorded 18 repetitions on the bench and was timed, unofficially, with a pair of 4.6s in the 40.
He said it would "mean the world" to him to get drafted.
"I've worked my whole life for this moment, so it would just be a testament to my hard work," the former Judson standout said.
Others who tested included receiver Kenny Bias, linebacker Ronnie Feist, tight end Jordan Jones, defensive end Ben Kane, fullback Andrew King, safety Jordan Moore, defensive end Romario Napoles and defensive lineman Jonathan Tuiolosega.
Bias, who completed his eligibility at UTSA in 2015, recorded a 4.52 in the 40.
One scout said the talent at this year's Pro Day wasn't what it was a year ago. Last year, tight end David Morgan enjoyed a good day and became the first UTSA player to get drafted. He was picked in the sixth round by the Minnesota Vikings. Also, the Green Bay Packers signed defensive tackle Brian King.
The 82nd NFL Draft is scheduled April 27-29. Round 1 will take place on the 27th, with rounds 2-3 on the 28th and rounds 4-7 on the 29th.
