New Era At QB
During fall camp, Coach Fran opened some eyes when he commented on the ability of Tyler Jones (6'2" 197lbs) saying that he could have a shot at the starting QB spot. It sent internet boards and sites into a feeding frenzy. As camp progressed, the signs were pointing to Jones possibly getting a red shirt behind Tyler Arndt and Jordan Moore. Arndt threw the ball the best and seemed to be the most prepared for the job. Moore showed flashes with his legs, but still needed work with his arm. The turning point came last week in a loss at Texas Tech. BobcatNation started growing restless as the Texas State Defense gave a man's effort, but couldn't get any return from the "O". Whether it was play calling or lack of execution and talent, the staff felt it was time for a change. Coach Franchione told media and reporters that he informed Jones to be prepared to take reps with the 1st team on Tuesday of last week and then named him the starter on Thursday. It didn't take long, the first series actually, for Jones to show that he could also be a threat with his feet. He showed great moxxy and took a zone read over the left side for 38 yards down to the Cowboy 27. It would eventually set up a Rob Lowe 1 yard TD plunge. All in all, Jones made it look like he was a seasoned upperclassmen who had 2 years under his belt. His stat line didn't jump out at you with Johnny Manziel type numbers, but for a true freshman making his first ever start, he passed for nearly 200 yards and 1 TD on 14 of 18 passing. He added another 56 yards on the ground, but most importantly, he didn't turn the ball over. It was a performance that helped guide the Bobcat offense to a net of 452 yards total offense. For those that forgot, it was Wyoming who had the #8 total offense in the nation coming into the game. Not bad for a true freshman who got the word 48 hours before kickoff that he'd be starting. Jones and the 'Cats now head to Ragin' Cajun country for a Sun Belt tilt on Saturday. BobcatNation is eager to see what Jones will do for an encore. Do remember, good or bad, it'll be his 2nd start ever, and yes, he's only a freshman.
