Game Balls - Lafayette

Texas State fell to Louisiana-Lafayette 48-24 Saturday evening but we wanted to highlight two outstanding performances from this week's conference-opening defeat.

Drew's Game Ball:

Brandon Smith, WR:

Smith, sophomore out of Alabama, has had a quiet season thus far. This changed Saturday night when he returned not one but two kickoffs for TD's. His first came in the third quarter on a 94-yard return. He was nearly tackled fighting through the first line, but after an official review was called good. His second came in the fourth quarter and took it to the house for a full 100 yards. He also lead the Texas State offense in receiving yards and catches. This was a standout performance for Smith who found a way to shine even in a brutal loss on the road. He received Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week and College Football Performance National Kickoff Returner of the Week Monday.

Cam's Game Ball:

David Mayo, LB

Mayo, who had 41 tackles last year, has 42 in the first five games. He added 13 to his season total Saturday as one of the only defensive standouts for a defense that struggled all night. He has 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, 2 passes defended and 1 quarterback hit this season. His 33 solo tackles rank Mayo 8th best in the nation.
