Get To Know: Georgia State

Every week, BI gets you closer to Texas State's next opponent. This week, it's Georgia State, who is playing their first full FBS schedule this season after a fast track into the big leagues.

Stadium: Georgia Dome

Georgia State is one of ten college programs that uses NFL stadiums for their home games. Houston, Miami, Massachusetts, Tulane, Temple, Pittsburgh, San Diego St., South Florida and Tennessee State are the other nine. The Panthers use just the lower bowl of the Georgia Dome where the Falcons play, which seats just under 30,000.

Conference Affiliations: 2

The Panthers haven't been playing football for long. The Sun Belt is just their second conference affiliation, their first FBS conference affiliation. They played in the CAA last year (1-10) and were FCS independents the two years prior. They have never beaten an FBS team, although they did defeat South Alabama while the Jaguars were also still an FCS independent.

Non-Georgia players: 22

This program has definitely being built from the inside out. Less than a handful of players come west of the Mississippi and a major chunk of players hail from the state of Georgia.

First dorm rooms: 1996

Rooms used to board Olympic athletes during the 1996 Olympic Games became the first on-campus dorms at Georgia State. The school enrolls almost as many students as Texas State and is home to the largest University police force in the state of Georgia.Their student-run radio station, WRAS-FM has the highest power of any college radio station in the US (100,000 watts).

Famous alumni

Celebrities Ludacris and Julia Roberts attended the school and William DuVall, lead singer of Alice and Chains also went there, for you rockers out there. The school was home to many famous politicians over the years as well.

Other spot achievements

Georgia State has never been known for their athletics, but their men's soccer team and softball teams made NCAA tournament appearances in 2011. Men's basketball hasn't won a conference title since 2002. Baseball won it's third conference title in 2009, making their first ever NCAA tourney appearance.
