Get To Know: South Alabama
Future non-conference opponents The Jaguars have not been ones to shy away from playing some of the big boys of the FBS level, despite their infant presence in it. Mississippi State, Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Nebraska are most of the big names, with home games scheduled against Mississippi State and Oklahoma State. The Jaguars are certainly proving quickly that they can compete. Their 3-3 record, including a win over a conference favorite, Western Kentucky earlier this year, has turned heads. Their three losses have come by a combined 9 points. Full FBS status South Alabama is just like Texas State and Georgia State - brand new FBS members. While Texas State was eligible for a bowl game last year and of full FBS status, 2013 is the Jaguars first full year with that title. They are eligible to win a Sun Belt Championship and could take a big step in that direction with a win over Texas State this Saturday. Other sports talent While football is a growing sport for the Jaguars, their baseball team has routinely made some noise. Six different times South Alabama has been one win away from making it to the College World Series - that's tough luck. The basketball team has made it to the tournament 8 times and 3 of those times, South Alabama was knocked out by the eventual champion. Talk about being on the wrong side of the bracket. Notable Alumni 12 Major League Baseball players, including David Freese, who won the 2011 World Series MVP Award and NLCS MVP Award with the St. Louis Cardinals. Eddie Stanky was the former head coach of the USA baseball program. Dan Povenmire created the Disney show Phineas and Ferb. Homecoming It may be Texas State's homecoming game but it will also be a homecoming of sorts for South Alabama's Montell Garner and Ridge James, two Texans on the Jaguar roster. Garner is from Dallas, Texas and went to Navarro JC before transferring to South Alabama. He is fourth on the team in tackles this year (30) and has one interception and fumble recovery. Tough Competitors The Jaguars haven't made life easy in other sports thus far in Sun Belt play. South Alabama volleyball stretched the Bobcats to five sets just two days ago, twice taking sets into sudden death before the Bobcats pulled away victorious. The two teams meet again on October 25. Soccer tied with the Jaguars 2-2 to kick off conference season. Texas State needed a goal in the 84th minute to avoid a loss.
