Hoops Game Preview: SFA
The Bobcats are going up against what could be a team Coach Kaspar has the upper hand on. As head coach of the Lumberjacks for the last 13 seasons, Kaspar led SFA to an overall 246-141 record. He was named the 2012-2013 NABC District 23 Coach of the Year, TABC Coach of the Year and Southland Conference Coach of the Year after SFA's 27-5 record last season. SFA netted wins over Big 12 foe Oklahoma, Conference USA's Tulsa, and Florida International of the Sun Belt. During 2010-2011 the Lumberjacks were the best in the nation at scoring defense, 56.7 points per game and were third best with 54.4 in 2011-2012. In 07-08 and 08-09 Kaspar led the Lumberjacks to a Southland Conference Championship. SFA also had the best record in 07-08 going 26-6 which was the school's best in the 25 year NCAA Division I program. Now, he leads a Texas State program and faces a complete rebuilding project. In only his second game as Bobcats Head Coach, he welcomes his old school. "We bring SFA in here, who's not bad fellas, I know my ex-players are going to want to kick my rear end. That's for sure." Kaspar said at the basketball exhibition. In SFA's opening game against UT-Tyler, Jacob Parker scored 19 points a new career high and Nikola Gajic's 14 points helped give the Lumberjacks the upper hand with a 90-64 win. The last time SFA met with TXST it was the Lumberjacks who came out on top, 71-63. Coach Kaspar stresses his defense the most throughout practices and there's no question about that. His defense is his best strategy out on the court. "Defensively they've grown, offensively we still have some growing to do, and let me tell you something, that's probably my fault because I emphasize defense so early." Said Kaspar. Tuesday night will be a battle between Kaspar's old team and his new one. You can bet he'll be eager to show the Lumberjacks what Texas State has gotten from their new coach. More wins and conference titles.
